Oedipus Rex Re-Imagined

OEDIPUS REX RE-IMAGINED:

The project brief required me to explore the possibilities of design by reconsidering, redesigning and republishing one text into an alternative visual perspective. I chose the play ‘Oedipus Rex’. The tragedy explores the idea that one often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it. Within the play Oedipus unknowingly kills his father and as a reader we take the stance that this event was an accident. My reimagining looks to convince the reader that Oedipus had full control of his actions and acted with intent. The choice to develop a newspaper formate was to immerse the reader within the story, that what they were reading could be a real article and the coloured paper, an almost flesh tone furthers this perspective.
The alternative iteration is aimed to use aliens and extra-terrestrial life to personify the idea of fate, the Gods and the story of Oedipus Rex. Unlike the previous example, this version composes the content in a clean, minimal and almost clinical manner. The format of the book, small and unimposing and the colour scheme, white and red with monochrome images, aims to develop this theme further. By highlighting specific lines from the play, I could then build on the perception of alien life by pairing it with an image that reflected the content.
